Fashion Tips from the Sofitel Girl's Day Out

Spring Racing is upon us in South Australia, and to really celebrate the start of the season we headed to Melbourne to attend the Yellowglen Terrace launch at the Sofitel Girl’s Day Out. The fashion stakes were certainly high, and we were looked out for anynew race day trends from the fabulous Flemington Racecourse!

Big hats are being seen less at the moment, making way for fabulous crowns and dainty headbands. Gold leafing was extremely popular at Sofitel, as were flower crowns and bands. You can find delicate headpieces like these from one of Adelaide’s most prominent accessories stores, Miss Martini. Stocking brands like Olga Berg and Morgan and Taylor, most headpieces are around the $100 mark and can be worn again to parties and cocktail events! If you’re on a tighter budget, Adelaide flower crown experts AdelaideUP will design a unique flower crown just for you for up to $60.

The Thurley ‘Mexican Carnival’ and ‘Fiesta’ dresses were extremely popular at Flemington. The ‘cold shoulder’ trend was prominent as well, with many girls opting for off-the-shoulder dresses or outfits with shoulder cutouts. Sheer materials and dramatic bell sleeves made simple dresses into statement outfits, with loads of Alice McCall and Zimmerman being spotted. If you can’t afford to buy these dresses outright, dress hire stores like Something Borrowed have all the biggest labels that you can borrow for a special day!

Never wear stilettos or satin shoes! Even if you’re spending the day lounging around the luxurious Festival Gardens at Morphetteville, you will eventually find yourself on grass at some point. Make sure you’re wearing solid heels that won’t sink into grass and spray your shoes with a water protector so any grass and mud can be easily wiped off. No matter how dirty or uncomfortable your shoes get, it’s never acceptable to take them off. Pro tip: bring lots of band-aids if you’re worried you might develop blisters throughout the day.

We visited Australian Fashion Labels and picked out some outfits that we thought represented our own personal styles. Kristen went for an off-the-shoulder floral dress with big sleeves from Keepsake, while Mel went for a monochromatic C/MEO Collective outfit with pleated pants and a dramatic top.

We can’t wait to see you all at Spring Racing at Morphettville! You can find us in the Festival Gardens, drinking all the champagne and eating all the food. There is a chance to win amazing prizes at Fashion at The Races on Melbourne Cup Day on November 1, so be sure to enter!
