Top Tips from Steph Claire Smith

With over 1 million followers on Instagram and the most relatable Snapchatting we've ever come across, it's no surprise that Melbourne based model Steph Claire Smith has taken the fashion and social media world by storm. Between managing her health and fitness platform Keep it Cleaner and her major modelling career, she managed to fit into 2016 her role as the the Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador for the VRC Spring Carnival. We spoke to Steph about her Ambassador role and got her top tips for everyone considering entering Fashion at The Races...

You’ve just come off the back off being the Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador, how was the Spring Carnival?!

Busy! But so fun. The role was an incredible experience for me, it was vey hands on and an awesome learning curve. I met and got to work along side some incredible people and once it was all over I was genuinely sad I wouldn't get to see them everyday anymore haha. Whether I'm working or not though I always enjoy the Spring Carnival, the energy is just amazing.

How was it being a judge? Did any looks or trends stand out?

It was so much fun being a judge. There is something really cool about having control over something as exciting as Fashions on the Field. There were too many trends to name! Which was what made it so hard at times to pick who went through, there were so many different looks!

What are your top 3 tips for ladies entering the competition?

  1. Cleanliness. Pretty makeup, not too full on.
  2. Confidence. Walk out with a smile and just have fun!
  3. Appropriateness. Don't walk out in giant heels and a mini dress you would wear to the club, and also read up on some of the guidelines that we as judges have to look out for. E.g. No strapless dress.

We’ve got a men’s competition for the first time this year; what fashion advice can you give South Australian men?

I personally LOVED judging the men's comp this year! So just get involved! Men have so much more to play with when it comes to accessories! Play with hats, ties, suspenders etc. The men that really stood out in Melbourne were the one who obviously looked at attention to detail.  What’s your favourite outfit you’ve worn to a race day?

I liked so many of them! If I had to pick though I would say my AAMI Victoria Derby day outfit when I wore Misha collection [pictured]. I felt it suited my general look outside of the races the most.

What do you love most about the races?

I love the smiles it brings to people's faces! It's spring time, it's a day with your mates, it's a few drinks while bidding on a horse and hoping for a win.... it's just a great time.
