Meet Strathalbyn Cup winner - Virginia Ross

Meet, Virginia Ross. She was crowned with the 2019 Strathalbyn Cup - Best Dressed Womenswear title last Sunday. We spent some time with Virginia after her win to get to know her (and her racing style) a little more.

Tell us about your winning outfit. What did you wear to the 2019 Strathalbyn Cup?

My dress is by Talulah, my boater was by Claire Hahn Millinery, my clutch is from Collette and my shoes were from Shoe Shed

What process did you go through to plan and choose this ensemble?

I purchased the boater from Millinery Market back around spring carnival time to go to Stakes Day, I wanted to wear it again and came across the dress on Instagram and instantly feel in love with how pretty it was and how well the pink would tie in with my boater.

Where did your love for racing fashion begin?

I loved wearing hats when I was a child, I had an aunty who made hats for a hobby and I use to love going to her house and trying them all on!

What was your first racing event and how has your style evolved since?

Naracoorte Cup was my first! My style probably has not changed a huge amount but back then my Mum used to make all my dresses, whereas now I just buy ready made outfits.

Who are your racewear style icons?

I love Kate Middleton and Jennifer Hawkins.

What are your favourite labels for racewear?

I have so many, but I love By Johnny, Thurley & Talulah the most!

Tell us about your makeup. What look did you choose and what key products did you use?

I used a mixture of Mac & Napoleon products. I always use Mac hydration and primer spray as I find it keeps my face feeling fresh for longer (especially on very hot and windy days!)

What products do you always take in your bag for a day at the races?

I always take my lipstick, bobby pins and Extra chewies!

How did you choose a hairstyle for the Strathalbyn Cup? What styling process did your locks go through?

I just used a donut for a very simple bun. My hair isn’t long enough to do very much styling with, plus I don’t have a lot of time to myself with four children! I usually have minimal time to spend on myself to get ready!

How would you describe your personal style?

I would say colourful and classy.

How do you spend your time when you’re not at racing events?

I live on a farm and I’m a mum of four beautiful and busy kids who keep me on my toes, but I absolutely love it!

Why should everyone book in a day at the races?

Because it’s always a great social day out with friends, a chance to dress up, see many beautiful outfits and if you are lucky – you may back a few winners!

What is your favourite race day to go to and why?

I love any country race meet they are so relaxed, Spring and Summer being my favourite seasons.

What is the biggest mistake women make when dressing for a race day?

Not being comfortable in what they are wearing! It’s a long day when you are not comfortable!

What is your style advice for first-time racegoers?

Be yourself and enjoy the whole experience a great day at the races can bring.

Virginia took home $1,000 cash and a $200 The Daily Edited voucher. She has also made it into the 2018-19 State Final where she'll compete against all the Best Dressed Womenswear winner for the season title in September.
